People go into the car dealership saying they want a “reliable car, one that’s going to last.” But how do you know how long something’s going to last? Well, the people over at iSeeCars.com gathered up the mileage listed on 11.8 million used cars traded in during 2020 and started tallying them up. And guess what? Big SUVs rule!
“They analyzed over 11.8 million Pre-Owned cars sold in 2020, models that were not in production as a 2021 model year,” said iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer. “Every time those cars change hands, there’s a record kept of everything: price, location, etc. And one of those things is current mileage. So I could see the mileage on those 11.8 million sold cars in 2020.”
While trucks and truck-based SUVs dominate the list, two Toyota hybrids and the Avalon sedan and Prius hatchback are also there, giving Toyota a pretty solid reputation as a maker of reliable cars, at least by this measure. Granted, very few cars, trucks or SUVs clear 200,000 miles in their lifetimes. The average for all vehicles is just one percent of them ever reach the 200k mark.
So read on to see if your big, honkin’ SUV made the list. Then go change the oil on whatever you have in the driveway.
1
Toyota Land Cruiser
16.3{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The Toyota Land Cruiser has been on the market in several generations over 50 years. It has a reputation among its owners similar to that of the Jeep Wrangler for go-anywhere, crush-everything indomitability. There will be a new Cruiser next year, to have V8 and V6 power and be called Land Cruiser 300. The most recent Land Cruiser got a reskin outside and a new interior inside, but this generation debuted in 2008, so it’s high time for a new model.
2
Toyota Sequoia
11.2{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
Toyota’s eight-seat full-size SUV is the company’s biggest vehicle, and rides on the Tundra body-on-frame architecture. Sturdy in this case means three tons. The first Sequoia debuted in 2000 and the one you see here is the second generation, which debuted in 2008. Pricing starts at under 50 grand.
3
Chevrolet Suburban
5.1{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
There’s a new Suburban for 2021, but it was the 2020 model that made number 3 on this list. While the 2021 gets an independent rear suspension and a diesel engine option, the 2020 was a member of the 11th-generation ‘Burban and it made do with two V8s, one at 5.3 liters and the big brother at 6.2. The original Suburban debuted in 1935, making this nameplate the oldest living SUV.
4
Ford Expedition
4.9{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The full-size, body on frame Expedition has been on the market almost 25 years, while the current-generation has been around since 2018, so it’s still mostly fresh. It got some aluminum bodywork and other parts that saved it 300 pounds of curb weight, keeping that figure down to 5,433 pounds. Powered by a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, the Expedition starts at an entirely reasonable (for such a huge vehicle) 50-or-so grand.
5
Toyota 4Runner
4.1{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The 4Runner is getting a bit long in the tooth, but still has a bite, especially off-road. The rugged icon of off-roading is in its fifth generation, but entered that fifth-gen way back in 2009, as its competitors love to point out. Nonetheless, when you park at a trailhead or on the edge of the road in El Cap meadow, where real active-lifestyle types go, you’ll see plenty of 4Runners (along with the less-expensive Tacomas with shells on the back). The 4’s 270-hp V6 has been around for even longer than this gen: about two decades. It’s the epitome of, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
6
Toyota Avalon
3.9{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The Avalon (and the Camry) were new last year, so it’s not clear exactly how many of these estimated high-mileage sales were new or old models. The new ones get the option of all-wheel drive, a feature it shares with its TNGA architecture with the Camry and RAV4. It also shares the 205-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The Avalon remains one of the smoothest and quietest cars to drive short of a Lexus, and it’s not that far from Lexus-like luxury. Pricing starts at about 36 grand.
7
Chevrolet Tahoe
3.9{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The Tahoe got a new independent rear and optional air springs last year, to smooth out the ride and to make it even more appealing to city drivers and their specific needs. It also got the option of a diesel engine—a 3.0-liter making 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. But you can still get the 355-hp 5.3-liter V8 and 420-hp 6.2-liter. That’s all on the 2021 model. While the Suburban has been around for 85 years, the Tahoe is a respectable 25-year-old, old enough to vote and hire a rental car. Chevy says Tahoe now accounts for nearly one of every four SUVs sold in America, so it must be doing something right.
8
Toyota Highlander Hybrid
3.8{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The fourth-gen Highlander Hybrid bowed at the very tail end of 2019, with three rows of seating and larger dimensions almost everywhere. It’s also available in two- and all-wheel drive, something new for the nameplate. The hybrid gets a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four helping make a combined system output of 243 hp. As a hybrid, mileage is the key and this one gets 36 city and 35 highway. Prices start at around $36,000.
9
Toyota Tundra
3.7{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
Our friends at Car and Driver said the 2021 Toyota Tundra is the oldest truck in its class, but it’s still a dutiful hauler and plenty capable when taken off the beaten path. Every model is powered by a 381-hp V8 that can tow up to 10,200 pounds. However, its powertrain suffers from a lazy transmission and poor fuel-economy ratings. Prices start at $33,825.
10
GMC Yukon XL
3.6{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The Yukon XL is the GMC version of the Suburban. Like its stablemates at GM, the Yukon XL gets an independent rear end, just like the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator got a few years ago. You also have the option of Magnaride shocks and air suspension. The tried and true 6.2-liter V8 makes 420 hp and an adequate 460 lb-ft of torque. And there’s loads of room for people and things.
11
Honda Ridgeline
3.4{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
Honda is in the process of rolling out a new Ridgeline, with standard AWD and a new, more upright, more truck-like exterior. The new truck will be good for 280 hp and 262 lb-ft, enough to tow 5,000 pounds and haul 1,580. Prices start at $36,490
12
GMC Yukon
3.3{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The Yukon is the GMC version of the Chevy Tahoe, hence, it gets all the upgrades the Tahoe gets, including independent rear end and optional air springs. It, too, gets more room inside in almost every dimension, as well as power underhood in the form of a 3.0-diesel, 5.3 V8 or range-topping 420-hp 460-lb-ft 6.2-liter V8. Prices start in the low 50s.
13
Honda Odyssey
2.9{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The latest Honda Odyssey debuted in 2018 and for 2021 it gets a light refresh including both exterior and interior changes. The 3.5-liter, 280-hp V6 stays, as does its 10-speed automatic transmission and 28 mpg on the highway.
Exterior design changes are light and include more powerful LED headlights to go along with the new front bumper, new fog light housings, and a new black grille. The Touring model now gets 19-inch wheels; on the Elite trim they’re machined and painted shark gray. Prices start in the low 30s.
14
Toyota Tacoma
2.8{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
Once again we turn to our colleagues at Car andDriver: Although most of its competitors are more refined, and the Jeep Gladiator is even more capable, the Tacoma has earned a cult following the hard way—over time, delivering what customers wanted. Its four-cylinder and V6 engines aren’t all that impressive, and its automatic transmission is as coordinated as a newborn baby bird, but the truck’s TRD models are particularly proficient at tackling trails and playing in the mud. While its interior is plasticky and even the crew-cab model has a diminutive back seat, the 2021 Tacoma is popular for reasons related to the heart rather than the head. Prices start under 30k.
15
Lincoln Navigator
2.6{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
This is the fourth-generation Navigator, and the 450-hp twin-turbo V6 and 10-speed automatic are straight from the mighty Raptor. Ford again went with body-on-frame (an updated F-150 chassis) and independent rear suspension. There are two lengths—the shorter, 122.5-inch wheelbase and the Navigator L with a 131.6-inch wheelbase; dimensionally the new truck is slightly longer in both wheelbase and overall length than the old one. Lincoln says the Navigator offers best-in-class legroom in the second and third rows. Prices are borderline six-figures.
16
Toyota Prius
2.6{c9ada2945935efae6c394ba146a2811ce1f3bfd992f6399f3fbbb16c76505588} hit 200,000 miles
The Prius is almost old enough to buy alcohol in some states, and it remains the ultimate hybrid hatchback four-door champ. It still rules in MPG, hitting 58 miles per precious gallon in city driving for the L Eco model. The 1.8-liter gas engine combines with electric assist for 121 hybrid system net power. MSRP starts at under 25 large.
