It was another down month in the auto industry in June 2022 versus a year ago in June. We should note that the microchip shortage had not completely decimated new vehicle inventories. Sales this June were off 242,000 from June 2021.
For the first time in a while, General Motors outsold Toyota in the second quarter. Toyota has been one of the hardest hit car companies by the industry-wide chip shortage.
YTD Sales
Sales for the first half of 2022 are off roughly 1,400,000 sales from the first half of 2021. So far, 6,240,000 vehicles have been sold in the United States. Only six brands increased sales out of thirty-eight. Fiat led the losers, with Buick not far behind them. Tesla showed the largest increase, although to be honest, I am always leery of the sales numbers they report.
A few companies have not reported sales at our deadline, including Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover/Jaguar, and Volvo.
Keep in mind when you look at the numbers below, the first half of 2021 was not greatly affected by the microchip shortage, but that will change as we look ahead to the remainder of 2022.
